Dear friends, we often receive inquiries about lumbar fusion surgery: apart from fixation with screws, why is a “spacer” placed between two vertebral bodies? What exactly is it, and what is its function? Today, we are going to explore the ”spacer” — the lumbar interbody fusion cage, commonly referred to as a ”Cage”.
What is Interbody fusion cages?
The cage fusion is an implant used in spinal surgery. Its main function is to be placed between two lumbar vertebrae during surgery, helping the two vertebrae fuse together. This in turn enhances the stability of the lumbar spine and alleviates pain.

What is the material of orthopedic fusion cage?
The spinal lumbar cage material is peek, The cage is made of polyetheretherketone (PEEK). The advantages lie in excellent biocompatibility and the ability to facilitate bone fusion.
How many types spine cage implants does we have?
We have two types cages, One is straight spinal cage (PLIF Cage) and another is angled spine cage (TLIF Cage)
What are the specification of PLIF Cage and TLIF Cage?

What is the surgical Technique of the fusion cages (Applicable to TLIF or MIS TLIF surgery)?
1. Discectomy Through an incision above the pedicle, access the foramen and remove disc material.
2. Prepare endplates and pack dise space.
3. Connect an appropriately sized trial cage to the applicator.
4. Insert the trial implant into the disc space, ensuring that the orientation of the trial implant is correct. The trial implant tip should be orientated medial.
5. Controlled and light hammering on the applicator may be required to pivot the trial implant into final position.
6. Remove non detachable trial implant and slide the slide hammer onto the end of the applicator knob with quick coupling, If detach the trial cage, pull the security ring down and simultaneously turn the applicator knob counterclockwise until it stops.
7. Select and pack cage with bone graft, then connect cage to the applicator
8. Recheck the firm connection of implant to applicator. Insert the implant into the disc space, ensuring that the orientation of the implant is correct. The implant tip should be orientated medial.
9. Controlled and light hammering on the applicator may be required to pivot the implant into final position. Use fluoroscopy during the pivoting procedure and confirm fit and position of the implant.
10. To detach the implant, pull the security ring down and simul taneously turn the applicator knob counterclockwise until it stops
